Buttercream Frosting

1/3 c. butter
4-1/2 c. sifted powdered sugar
1/4 c. milk
1-1/2 t. vanilla
food coloring {optional}

In a mixing bowl beat butter until fluffy. Gradually add 2 c. powdered sugar, beating well. Slowly beat in the 1/4 c. milk and vanilla.
Slowly beat in the remaining powdered sugar beat in additional milk as needed to reach spreading consistency. If desired tint with food coloring. This frosts the top and sides of 2 8 or 9 inch layers.
